Introduction Project Approach Material Market Development Solid Waste Assessment Company Experience

Introduction

In order to offer a comprehensive and unique recycling program to each client, RDA Recycling Services employs a variety of analytical and assessment tools in our program design. These may include disposal and recycling record review, purchasing practices and records review, facility walk-throughs which encompass employee interviews, operation and production practice review, waste sorts, and analysis of cost/benefit, cost savings/avoidance and equipment/supplies.

We also believe that a program can only be successful if it has company-wide support. As a result, RDAR offers an employee orientation and education program to each client.  This program is designed to introduce company employees to RDAR as well as introduce the Recycling Program and educate the employees on how the program will work and what role the employees will play in its operation. The educational effort may include face to face meetings with various departments as well as hand-outs detailing all facets of the program. We have found this approach to be highly successful and employees have been responsive and appreciative of being involved.

It is RDAR's goal to provide you with a program that is the least disruptive to your organization's operations but still allows you to significantly decrease your disposal costs, and increase your recycling efforts, as well as make a statement to the community that you are aware of your responsibility to be a part of a larger environmental solution.

Project Approach

In order to determine an appropriate course of action for recycling and source reduction activities for a company, RDAR first prepares a Solid Waste Assessment. The purpose of this assessment is to analyze the amount of solid waste being generated annually, the composition of the waste stream, and the attendant cost of solid waste disposal. Included in this assessment is an evaluation of any internal recycling program that you may have implemented.  This assessment provides a "snapshot" of the types and volumes of solid waste being generated, as well as the overall disposal practices for your organization. The assessment can also include an evaluation of how the solid waste is being managed once it is removed from the your premises including any potential long-term liability exposure.

The next step in the process is the development of the Recycling and Waste Reduction Program for the company.  Utilizing the information obtained via the assessment, we determine the projected recovery of materials by type and volume for diversion from landfilling.  Certain items are easily recycled - paper, cans, cardboard, etc. - generally in local markets.  Markets for other materials may be regional or even national.  Once the markets are identified and secured for the materials, RDAR in conjunction with your organization's personnel designs the method in which the material will be aggregated for recycling internally and in what manner the recyclables will be transported to the appropriate markets.

The level of success of any recycling program can be directly related to the level of participation of  the company's personnel.  In order to obtain the maximum rate of participation possible, we have developed an Education and Awareness Program.  This program provides not only the initial "in-servicing" of the participants, but also the continued monitoring and evaluation on a weekly basis as to the volume of materials diverted from landfilling.  This continuing monitoring allows RDAR to ascertain where the program may be experiencing problems and move in a timely fashion to correct them.  This program also provides feedback to the company through Quarterly Reports that provide information concerning the amount of material that is recycled by the company by material type on a weekly basis.

While there are a number of recycling companies providing service to clients ranging from trash haulers to small independent ones, RDAR feels unique from the standpoint of our comprehensive approach to recycling and waste reduction, and our Material Markets Network.  RDAR has one of the most extensive material markets in place today.  Many times a company will have a waste by-product that dominates its waste stream.  This product may be more exotic in nature in that markets are not easily identified.  RDAR is continuously evaluating and locating markets for a wide array of materials that others cannot ascertain.  RDAR's commitment to this comprehensive approach results in our clients not only increasing their recycling activities, but also experiencing a net savings in their disposal costs.

Material Market Development

One of the primary keys necessary for the design, implementation and administration of a successful waste reduction and recycling program is the ability to identify and maintain solid markets for the recyclable material.  Markets for many of the easily recyclable materials are local and regional in nature, while locating markets for the more exotic materials can be both national and international.  And, since the majority of the materials are in fact commodities, there is definitely both national and international influences on the pricing structure.

One of the real strengths, and one that separates RDAR from other companies, is our continuing participation in the recycling marketplace.  For the past 8 years, RDAR has had an active role with our clients in identifying, locating, establishing and maintaining the appropriate recycling markets for our clients on a weekly basis.  Through this active participation, RDAR understands markets and what materials can be recycled.

Go to our Materials List for a list of  commonly recycled materials.

RDAR is responsible for not only initially identifying material markets, but also continuing to participate directly in the markets on a daily and weekly basis in ensuring that the materials are delivered and sold.  As an active participant in the materials marketplace, RDAR is quite familiar with the markets' interactive dynamics.  Therefore, RDAR is able to design programs that will be ongoing in nature, and not as subject to market swings.  This is accomplished by establishing both primary and secondary markets for the materials.  And, since RDAR's work with private business, industry and government is continual, RDAR is always exploring markets for new materials, which can lead in many instances to market investigation both nationally and internationally.

RDAR has clients in many different locales, which has enabled RDAR to explore and subsequently establish relationships in various markets.  Once the markets are secured, RDAR then assists the clients in determining how the material is to be aggregated and transported to the markets.  The  type of  program that is implemented is dependent on the types of materials that are generated,  and the goals of a given client.  Understanding market dynamics enables RDAR to design programs that  maximizes revenue, and furthers environmental protection.

In many instances, both public and private sector entities design recycling programs by determining which materials they want to recycle, collecting the materials, and then begin the search for the markets.  RDAR's approach is to not collect a single pound of any material before firm markets are secured.  Otherwise, someone may be left with a lot of materials that cannot be recycled due to the fact that markets were never secured.

Solid Waste Assessments and Program Design

Many private businesses have felt the financial effects of federal, state and local solid waste management directives.  The financial burden has increased as local governments have begun assessing container "pull" taxes, waste generation fees, export fees, etc.  In addition, consumers have started demanding environmentally sound business practices.  Businesses, institutions and industry  have responded by changing their purchasing practices, reducing excess waste generation through production changes and implementing comprehensive source reduction and recycling programs.

RDAR has been involved in this movement, providing comprehensive waste assessments, designing specific source reduction and recycling programs, and assisting in the implementation of those programs.  RDAR has performed the following activities in those areas:

Waste Assessments
  • record examination

  • evaluating policies & procedures for waste handling

  • contract review (hauler, disposal, recycling)

  • evaluating procurement standards

  • reviewing waste generation by department

  • determining waste stream characterization

Facility Walk Through
  • identifying physical layout

  • reviewing production levels

  • personnel interviews

  • background of company operation

Waste Reduction and Recycling Program Design
  • strategies for waste reduction and recycling

  • material profile and collection

  • material market logistics and sale

  • purchasing modifications

  • education and training

  • cost avoidance and savings

Company Experience

Commercial Accounts:
RDA Recycling Services, Inc. is currently servicing numerous commercial and/or business accounts located in both Ohio and Indiana.  These accounts range in size from local banking institutions to large corporate headquarters. In addition, RDAR has been working with a regional development corporation that specializes in commercial and industrial site development and facility leasing.  As a result RDAR is servicing multi-tenant office complexes.

Due to our specialized nature, we are able to successfully design and implement recycling programs for both the small commercial interest with ten or less employees to the large commercial establishments with over 1,000 employees.

Industrial Accounts:
RDA Recycling Services, Inc.'s industrial clientele has been growing at a steady pace. This is due in part because of the increased disposal costs throughout the region.  However, RDAR has carefully developed a material market network that reaches far beyond a regional area.  RDA Recycling Services, Inc.  has been extremely successful in locating markets for those industrial materials that have traditionally been thrown away.  These materials include, foil membrane, shrink wrap, polystyrene, plastics, rubber and scrap fabric.

While RDAR cannot guarantee that all materials an industry may produce can be recycled, it is our practice to heavily research markets on behalf of our Clients.  We can say with confidence that we have been able to locate those "hard to find" material markets over 95% of the time.

Institutional Accounts:
RDA Recycling Services, Inc. has designed specialty recycling programs for eighteen (18) hospitals and has implemented those programs in twelve (12) hospitals located in both Ohio and Indiana. At  those institutions, our Clients have been able to reduce their disposal container size and/or the number of times each container is pulled, literally resulting in tens of thousands of dollars in annual cost savings.  We also designed and implemented comprehensive recycling programs for four (4) universities and colleges in Ohio.
